Pollinator Rescue Ranger Program: Mission Headquarters
Become a Defender of our Pollinators

The Gladys Porter Zoo is calling on all students, scouts, and nature lovers across the Rio Grande Valley to join the Pollinator Rescue Ranger Program. We are dedicated defenders of our regional pollinators, with a special focus on Monarch butterflies—an AZA SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) species.

Did you know that pollinators are responsible for 1 out of every 3 bites of food we eat? From the fruits in our lunchboxes to the flowers in our parks, we rely on them to survive. However, the Monarch’s 3,000-mile journey depends on “pit-stops” in backyards just like yours.

Are you ready to join the mission? Follow these three steps to earn your badge.

Step 1: Intelligence Gathering (The Learning Mission)

To lead a movement, you must first know your mission. Complete your training through one of these three paths:

  • Option A: The Live Mission (Party for the Planet)

Join us at the Gladys Porter Zoo on Saturday, April 18, 2026. Visit our “Pollinator Rescue Ranger” Action Stations for hands-on field training.

  • Option B: The Specialist Workshop

Schedule a deep-dive workshop for your troop, school, or club with our Education Department. Focus on hands-on habitat creation and monarch conservation.

  • Option C: The Digital Deployment

Complete your training from home! Watch our conservation videos and follow our DIY Butterfly Puddler Tutorial to learn how to support local wildlife.

Step 2: Backyard Action (Habitat Creation)

Put your knowledge to work by creating a sanctuary in your own neighborhood.

  1. Plant for Pollinators: Add at least one native nectar plant or native milkweed to your garden or a porch container.
  2. Hydration Station: Build a “Butterfly Puddler.” A shallow dish with water and landing stones allows pollinators to refuel safely without drowning.

Step 3: The Digital Ranger Report

Report your success to Headquarters to claim your reward!

  • Snap a Photo: Take a picture of your new habitat or your training in action.
  • Post & Tag: Share it on Facebook or Instagram. Tag @GladysPorterZoo and use #GPZRescueRanger.
  • Educate: Include a “Monarch Fact” in your caption to explain why they are an AZA SAFE species!

The Reward: Badge & Admission Ticket

Once your report is posted, visit the Zoo’s Education Department to show your post and collect your rewards:

  • Official Badge: An exclusive Pollinator Rescue Ranger Patch to wear with pride.
  • Complimentary Ticket: A free Zoo admission ticket for your next visit to see our conservation work in action.
