On September 3rd, 2021, the Gladys Porter Zoo will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. It was on a Friday in 1971 that the Zoo lifted its gate to the public for the first time.
To celebrate its 50th birthday, the Gladys Porter Zoo will be launching a social media campaign, which aims to highlight the wonderful community that has supported the Zoo throughout the years.
Since April 8th is National Zoo Lovers day, the Gladys Porter Zoo has chosen that date to kick off the campaign. From April 8th, and for the duration of its birthday year, the Zoo plans to post “throwback” photos every Thursday until September 1, 2022. Zoo staff are reaching out to the public to recreate old photos of their visits to the Zoo in their childhood or younger years. The photos should be accompanied by a short explanation of the photo, including the estimated year the photos were taken and a brief description of those pictured.
The photos can be submitted via e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Staff will select their favorite “before and after” photos and publish them on the Zoo’s social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) as well as any additional 50th birthday displays, such as the special exhibit planned in conjunction with the Brownsville Historical Association.
Persons whose photos are selected will also receive a family pack (4) of passes to the Zoo.
