This year’s Zoofari fundraising event, held on October 6th, offered many exciting auction items, including the opportunity to name the youngest member of the giraffe herd, a female giraffe born on August 9th. One lucky bidder by the name of Mary Muratore earned the honor of being able to choose a name for the calf. The name she chose was “Rocket”.
“My husband and I moved to the area to support the growing aerospace activities here in South Texas,” stated Mary. “I thought it would be a great idea for this giraffe to grow up along with the new launch pad.”
Rocket made her big “launch” on January 17th. She is enjoying her time on exhibit with the rest of the herd.
Giraffe numbers have been declining in the wild for decades, but just recently, they were listed as a vulnerable species by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The biggest threats to their populations include loss of habitat due to human encroachment and poaching.
