Tiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum) - The dryness of southern Texas and northeastern Mexico makes life for salamanders difficult, and the secretive tiger salamander is our only terrestrial species. Many people never see them because they spend almost all of their time underground, coming to the surface only in the winter, to breed in temporary ponds.
