West African gaboon viper (Bitis
gabonica rhinoceros) - This big African viper
has the longest fangs of any snake. It is a classic
sit-and-wait predator, with disruptive coloration.
Its head resembles a leaf, and the horns on its
nose add to the effect. It sits motionless on the
forest floor, waiting for hapless mammals to approach.
When they come within striking range, it lunges
at them, imbedding its long fangs as deeply as possible
while it pours venom into its prey. The venom is
quite potent and the prey usually dies within a
few minutes.
